An Overview of IP Telephony Technology and IP Television Technology

What is IP Telephony?

IP Telephony, or in other words called Internet Telephony, is the means of communications that involves digital phone systems based on a number of Internet standards. It is a process of making a phone system digital in a way to take advantage of the Internet and any hardware or applications attached to it. The main aim of IP Telephony is to give the users a better and cost effective technology and increase productivity and benefit businesses.

The ip telephone refers to communications services including voice, facsimile, voice mail etc that are transported via the Internet, instead of the public switched telephone network (PSTN). It works by converting analog voice signal to digital format and compressing the signal into Internet protocol (IP) packets to be easily transmitted over the Internet and vice versa.

IP Telephony, in general, is the experience of communicating effectively and consistently using Internet protocols; this being achieved by harnessing the power of VoIP by virtue of the latter’s user-friendly features.

With the evolution of internet, IP-based networks have progressively become the perfect alternative to the traditional telephony system – public switched telephone network or PSTN.  Internet Telephony Service Providers (ITSPs) are a blessing in disguise, providing voice and fax services in the exact same, or in fact even better functionally offered by public telecommunication operators (PTOs).  With internet telephony, you can call any country in the world at a price three times lower than what is offered by a PSTN phone or your cellular network. Although, there are many countries where IP telephony is banned, however, one can easily make internet or voip calls to almost any country, any telephone in the world.  Owing to the  many added features being offered by internet telephony and the economical calling costs, people are compelled to acquire the service and enjoy unlimited pleasure of both saving money and staying connected with friends, family and business associates, very conveniently.

What is IP TV?

IPTV is abbreviated for internet protocol television. IPTV (Internet Protocol Television) is a way of distributing television content over hi-speed broadband internet, providing a more customised and interactive user experience. IPTV brings together the television, internet and telephone. This popular technology works by transporting data information and Audio and Video (AV), across an IP based digital network, which includes Ethernet, WAN, LAN or the internet. A set top box (STB), that allows viewers to watch hundreds of channels and order movies through video-on-demand (VOD), plus AV information can easily be streamed over existing networks to your PC or television.

In order to race against cable’s triple play of voice, data, and video, telecommunication companies started offering an amazing service to its customers – an easy and convenient way of TV programming simply via a high speed Internet connection, which beats the cable services’ triple play and offers a quadruple play instead with a combination of wireless phone, Internet, land-line phone and TV programming.

IPTV illustrates a system proficient enough to receive and be able to display a video stream, encoded into a series of Internet Protocol packets. If you’ve ever experienced watching a video clip on your computer via internet, then you should know that this is a form of using IPTV system.

Technically, both the services utilize a broadband internet to function; both can be used anywhere, anytime using your mobile phones and interestingly, both utilize the same technology to function – using internet protocols.
